Lady fern (Athyrium filix-femina), despite its unsettling name, is a fern very easy to handle. Its delicate leaves caress the ears of forest fauna whenever one of them runs past it either hunting or running away. It’s feminine nature likes company of similar forest plants but, like a true female, it does not tolerate competition on her territory − it’s lively and expansive and can be planted only in groupings of 4 per square meter. This adorable plant enjoys naturalistic and forest gardens and makes fast friends with cats visiting to rub on her soft leaves. This fern has long, featherly leaves reaching up to 100 cm. It likes places shaded and protected from the wind. The soil should be soft, rich and constantly moist. It looks particularly spectacular in the vicinity of water reservoirs.
